The first annual Doutta Galla Trivia Night went off with a bang on Saturday the 2nd of February, with over 60 people thoroughly enjoying themselves and testing their knowledge. After taking an early lead, the “Sik Dogiezz” table consisting of Michele & Michael Benton, Rose & Mark Swindon, Sharon Spyrou, John Beyer, Kieran Benton & Alexander Swindon held off challenges throughout the night from two other tables to take the crown, with nearly 90% of the questions answered correctly.
The “Eggheads” and “Hugh Jorrgens” came in second and third, respectively, with the Eggheads taking the siver medal in the final two rounds, both answering between 80-85% of the questions correctly.
The Scoreboard will be uploaded when it is located, as some people were unhappy with the result and took it out on the defenceless electronic scoreboard.
A large amount of money was raised for the club, with many people giving generously to help their “cause” by “buying answers” for one dollar. The night was a huge success, with plans already in place for next years event.
Presenting the DouttaGalla.com Special Awards:
- Most Inventive Table Name: went to the table entitled “Have you met my friend Aleks?”. It is still undetermined who Aleks actually is, but he is now everyone’s friend.
- Longest Table Name: went to a table who’s name was totally organic and kept growing longer as the night went on, which was the table “Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasive Forearms“. Pity they couldn’t use their muscles to answer any questions, and were cellar dwellars all night.
- Loudest Table: not really a contest as this award went straight to the “Courtside” table. As soon as they walked in their presence was felt throughout the bowling club.
- Best Finishers: was awarded to the table with the lowest average age, “The Dream Team” who pipped Courtside on the line to get off the bottom of the Scoreboard by half a point, which was awarded to them for their claim that Andre Aggassi played himself in the 1992 Wimbledon final and their attempt to agrue that it was Pat Rafter who played Agassi after being informed how stupid their answer was (the answer was Goran Ivanisevic). It is important to note that Courtside were deducted 5 points for having 9 table members.
- Luckiest Attendee: was given without a doubt to Jeff Tomlinson, who won the Curnows Tennis Racquet in the raffle from only buying 2 tickets, and who last weekend placed a $2 bet on at the races to win over $200. Ironically, Jeff doesn’t play tennis, but he has assured the organisers that he will now take it up.
Thanks to all the organisers and those that helped set up the night, excellent M.C. Michael Mann, Markers Aaron Sharpe and Tim Benton, and Ashley Mann for her creative input in decorating the Doutta Galla Bowling Club, which never looked better.
Special Thanks go to our Sponsors for the Night, without their support the night would not be possible:
- Lincoln Salon
- Curnows Tennis
- Nelson Alexander Real Estate
Several Doutta Galla members make the trip every Labour Day Long Weekend to Quambatook in Northern Victoria for a Tennis Tournament, and are currently recruiting members to join them up for a greate weekend of tennis action.
The Men’s site had a dramatic and thrilling victory over Keilor East T.C. on November 30th. The team, consisting of Russell Bedggood, Terry Benton, Michael Benton, Tim Benton, Liam Benton, Anthony Lieu & Kieran Benton, scraped into fourth position and knocked off first in the semi final. The match started off at West Brunswick, but after the first two sets, the match was moved down the road to Royal Park due to faulty court lights. After a few hard fought sets, Doutta Galla prevailed and won the final by about 12 games. Celebrations are still continuing……..
The Junior side, consisting of Kavindu Gamage, James Reid, Drew Gilpin and Kieran Benton defeated St John Bosco’s by 9 games at Moomba Park T.C. on the 7th of December. After demoralising every team throughout the year, St John Bosco’s gave the boys a scare with some very close matches, however Doutta Galla prevailed and the game was won in the end. It is unfortunate that the team will no longer be together next season for various reasons, as they cannot complete the “premiership hat-trick” of 3 grand final wins in a row, having won the past two flags after two massive seasons.
