Poll Results

Our latest poll has now finished and the results are in. But first, the question was: Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova recently won the 2008 Australian Open. Were they worthy winners?

33% of voters stated that Both Deserved it, 33% said Djokovic only, Sharapova scared everyone away with that screech, 17% said Sharapova only, Djokovic only beat Federer because he was sick. and 16% said Neither, the players of yesteryear would have thrashed them. The results were interesting, to say the least.

Corowa Easter Tournament Results

Many club members made the trip again to the Corowa Easter Tournament, which is in Southern NSW, on the Murray river between Yarrawonga and Albury/Woodonga, and the Club was represented well throughout.

Ashley Mann and Chrissy Temple came runners up in the A-Grade Ladies Doubles, while there were a couple close semi-final losses by Jan Fielding / Warren Peters (B-Grade Mixed Doubles) and Chrissy Temple / Aaron Sharpe (A-Grade Mixed Doubles). All involved raved about the tournament, a great deal of Tennis and Golf was played by all. All the entrants are looking forward to next year’s tournament and all members are encouraged to attend, as this is an event that you shouldn’t miss.

A Letter from the President

Dear Members,

It has come to the attention of the committee in the past months that many members have not been paying for the use of lights when they have used them. We will remind everyone that it is $10 per hour per court.

This is a form of stealing and will not be tolerated any longer.

In addition we would like to remind our members of the rules of having visitors playing at our courts. They must be supervised by a member at all times and should not be left alone at all. Furthermore, a visitors fee is needed to be paid upon arrival. Juniors are $1 each and Adults are $3.

We would like to emphasise the low price for visitors. It is not a great deal of money and it is expected of our members to be honest enough to pay for the use of the courts.

Please note members, the above mentioned topics will no longer be tolerated by any member. The committee does not want to change the honour system we have in place now and have had for many years, however if this trend continues stronger consequences will be enforced.

For repeat offenders, a possible termination of membership will occur.

Help the club who continues to provide you with fantastic facilities and a great atmosphere.

Regards,

Aaron Sharpe
President Doutta Galla Tennis Club

Trivia Night Results

The first annual Doutta Galla Trivia Night went off with a bang on Saturday the 2nd of February, with over 60 people thoroughly enjoying themselves and testing their knowledge. After taking an early lead, the “Sik Dogiezz” table consisting of Michele & Michael Benton, Rose & Mark Swindon, Sharon Spyrou, John Beyer, Kieran Benton & Alexander Swindon held off challenges throughout the night from two other tables to take the crown, with nearly 90% of the questions answered correctly.

The “Eggheads” and “Hugh Jorrgens” came in second and third, respectively, with the Eggheads taking the siver medal in the final two rounds, both answering between 80-85% of the questions correctly.

The Scoreboard will be uploaded when it is located, as some people were unhappy with the result and took it out on the defenceless electronic scoreboard.

A large amount of money was raised for the club, with many people giving generously to help their “cause” by “buying answers” for one dollar. The night was a huge success, with plans already in place for next years event.

Presenting the DouttaGalla.com Special Awards:

  • Most Inventive Table Name: went to the table entitled “Have you met my friend Aleks?”. It is still undetermined who Aleks actually is, but he is now everyone’s friend.
  • Longest Table Name: went to a table who’s name was totally organic and kept growing longer as the night went on, which was the table “Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasive Forearms“. Pity they couldn’t use their muscles to answer any questions, and were cellar dwellars all night.
  • Loudest Table: not really a contest as this award went straight to the “Courtside” table. As soon as they walked in their presence was felt throughout the bowling club.
  • Best Finishers: was awarded to the table with the lowest average age, “The Dream Team” who pipped Courtside on the line to get off the bottom of the Scoreboard by half a point, which was awarded to them for their claim that Andre Aggassi played himself in the 1992 Wimbledon final and their attempt to agrue that it was Pat Rafter who played Agassi after being informed how stupid their answer was (the answer was Goran Ivanisevic). It is important to note that Courtside were deducted 5 points for having 9 table members.
  • Luckiest Attendee: was given without a doubt to Jeff Tomlinson, who won the Curnows Tennis Racquet in the raffle from only buying 2 tickets, and who last weekend placed a $2 bet on at the races to win over $200. Ironically, Jeff doesn’t play tennis, but he has assured the organisers that he will now take it up.

Thanks to all the organisers and those that helped set up the night, excellent M.C. Michael Mann, Markers Aaron Sharpe and Tim Benton, and Ashley Mann for her creative input in decorating the Doutta Galla Bowling Club, which never looked better.

Special Thanks go to our Sponsors for the Night, without their support the night would not be possible:

  • Lincoln Salon
  • Curnows Tennis
  • Nelson Alexander Real Estate
